This is almost like wet sanding a finish coat, and takes out the small dirt nibs.\u00c2\u00a0 If there are any runs in the primer, wet sanding will be needed for a nice finish.\u00c2\u00a0 Tack the whole body with a tack cloth and move on to the finish color. It would have been nice to see some more up-to-date vinyl tires. But, remembering this is an old school design the kit supplied parts were used instead of going to an aftermarket setup.<br \/>\n<a title=\"Indy9 by dougcole2000, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/29474631@N04\/4957762861\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4103\/4957762861_b4254df01e.jpg\" alt=\"Indy9\" width=\"500\" height=\"362\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nFigure 9<\/p>\n<p>After gluing the two-piece molded tires together, use an emery board to clean them up just like on the body.\u00c2\u00a0 The emery board gave the appearance of the tires being worn.<br \/>\n<a title=\"Indy10 by dougcole2000, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/29474631@N04\/4957762943\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4131\/4957762943_42030644de.jpg\" alt=\"Indy10\" width=\"500\" height=\"410\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nFigure 10<\/p>\n<p>Use a piece of Evergreen (plastic stock) rod to mount the tires, add tape to the back of the wheel then paint them with semi-gloss black paint.\u00c2\u00a0 After they dry, paint the wheels by hand with Testors\u00c2\u00ae silver.\u00c2\u00a0 When this was very dry, thin out a bit of Testors\u00c2\u00ae flat black and brushed it over the silver area of the wheels and carefully dabbed with a paper towel (make sure none of the excess gets on the black tires).\u00c2\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t get a picture of the lettering on the tires, but used a very fine tip brush and flat white and painted the letters on the tire.\u00c2\u00a0 A small amount of paint is needed for this.\u00c2\u00a0 It takes a while to get the knack, but the effect is great.<br \/>\n<a title=\"Indy11 by dougcole2000, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/29474631@N04\/4958356714\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4151\/4958356714_0d73a23490.jpg\" alt=\"Indy11\" width=\"369\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nFigure 11<\/p>\n<p>This is a good point to move back to the body. Using Testors\u00c2\u00ae flat black brush paint the inner panels of the body and dash panel. Then paint around the feature line surrounding the windshield with silver.\u00c2\u00a0<br \/>\n<a title=\"Indy12 by dougcole2000, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/29474631@N04\/4958355746\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4111\/4958355746_883fe8336c.jpg\" alt=\"Indy12\" width=\"500\" height=\"332\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nFigure 12<\/p>\n<p>Once again, because this is an old school kit, there were no chrome pieces.\u00c2\u00a0 Instead of hand painting the grill bare metal foil was used to simulate chrome. Cut the foil a little larger than needed and place it on the grill area then rub lightly with a q-tip to the mold lines.\u00c2\u00a0<br \/>\n<a title=\"Indy13 by dougcole2000, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/29474631@N04\/4957762327\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4097\/4957762327_90f8d7f6fb.jpg\" alt=\"Indy13\" width=\"500\" height=\"356\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nFigure 13<\/p>\n<p>Using a new, sharp Exacto blade trim the feature line of the grill in small sections at a time being careful not to pull the foil away. Go over it again with a q-tip to smooth the edges.\u00c2\u00a0<br \/>\n<a title=\"Indy14 by dougcole2000, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/29474631@N04\/4957763051\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4149\/4957763051_6f41922333.jpg\" alt=\"Indy14\" width=\"500\" height=\"354\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nFigure 14<\/p>\n<p>Lastly, thin out some flat black paint and washed it over the grill, wiping off the excess.\u00c2\u00a0 This gives it some depth.<br \/>\n<a title=\"Indy15 by dougcole2000, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/29474631@N04\/4957762375\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4130\/4957762375_910c369a17.jpg\" alt=\"Indy15\" width=\"500\" height=\"376\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nFigure 15<\/p>\n<p>Because this was a multi piece body, it needed to be taped together so the decals could be more accurately placed from one panel to the next.<br \/>\n<a title=\"Indy16 by dougcole2000, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/29474631@N04\/4957763391\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4128\/4957763391_423e784220.jpg\" alt=\"Indy16\" width=\"500\" height=\"439\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nFigure 16<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to decals, it helps to use a coat of clear to give them more strength. A good choice is Duplicolor\u00c2\u00ae Crystal Clear<sup>TM<\/sup>.\u00c2\u00a0 A light, smooth coat is plenty, be careful not to get too heavy.\u00c2\u00a0 Let them dry at least 4 hours in a warm dry place but it can take longer, make sure they&#8217;re not tacky before trying to apply them and don&#8217;t force-dry them with heat. Due to the clear coat, you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll need to cut as close as possible to the decal design.\u00c2\u00a0 This gives a better edge.\u00c2\u00a0 Soak the decal in warm (not hot) water for 15-20 seconds, remove and let set for 15-20 seconds.\u00c2\u00a0 Check to see if the decal is ready to slide off the paper, proceed when it is.\u00c2\u00a0 After placing the decal in the desired area, touch lightly with a paper towel or clean absorbent cloth to remove any excess water.\u00c2\u00a0 Then once the decal is starting to set, it can be moved a little to adjust.\u00c2\u00a0 Blot again with the cloth to press into place.<br \/>\n<a title=\"Indy17 by dougcole2000, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/29474631@N04\/4958356912\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4088\/4958356912_f8577d3c40.jpg\" alt=\"Indy17\" width=\"500\" height=\"444\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nFigure 17<\/p>\n<p>There were some air bubbles in the decals after applying.\u00c2\u00a0 These were caused by some of the contours in the body.\u00c2\u00a0 While the decal was still damp use an Exacto knife with a new blade to make very small cuts in the decals, then blot with a damp cloth or paper towel until the decal lays down.\u00c2\u00a0 This takes patience and a steady hand.<br \/>\n<a title=\"Indy18 by dougcole2000, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/29474631@N04\/4958357252\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4102\/4958357252_2d62d813b4.jpg\" alt=\"Indy18\" width=\"500\" height=\"321\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nFigure 18<\/p>\n<p>Install the motor then move on to the front suspension.\u00c2\u00a0 The suspension was the one place that gave me trouble.\u00c2\u00a0 Mock up and test fit everything before gluing it together.\u00c2\u00a0 The holes where parts go together may need to be cleaned out or enlarged. Do a little at a time until the parts fit. This was especially important when it came to the radius rod parts (part #11 and 12, c&amp;d section) and the king pins (part #24, f section).\u00c2\u00a0 These will definitely have to be sanded to make the diameter smaller.\u00c2\u00a0 This will give a smoother fit into the steering knuckle.\u00c2\u00a0 The directions show the parts.\u00c2\u00a0 Take your time with this part of the model.<br \/>\n<a title=\"Indy19 by dougcole2000, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/29474631@N04\/4957763627\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4089\/4957763627_03ac3928be.jpg\" alt=\"Indy19\" width=\"500\" height=\"308\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nFigure 19<\/p>\n<p>The rear suspension parts need to be test fit and mocked up also.\u00c2\u00a0 The parts needed the same sort of attention as the front suspension.<br \/>\n<a title=\"Indy20 by dougcole2000, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/29474631@N04\/4958357174\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4102\/4958357174_e40ed73261.jpg\" alt=\"Indy20\" width=\"500\" height=\"320\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nFigure 20<\/p>\n<p>There is no precut front windshield for this kit, just a clear plastic sheet.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s a good thing there&#8217;s extra, cutting it out or gluing it in may not go perfectly the first time.\u00c2\u00a0 The direction sheet gives an excellent template.\u00c2\u00a0 Cut this template off the direction sheet and tape it to the clear sheet, then cut it out with sharp scissors.<br \/>\n<a title=\"Indy21 by dougcole2000, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/29474631@N04\/4957763739\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4132\/4957763739_f7fbc1f195_m.jpg\" alt=\"Indy21\" width=\"240\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a> <a title=\"Indy22 by dougcole2000, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/29474631@N04\/4958357420\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4109\/4958357420_2751c4e606_m.jpg\" alt=\"Indy22\" width=\"240\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nFigures 21 &amp; 22<\/p>\n<p>To glue this in Gorilla Glue was used so it set up very fast.\u00c2\u00a0 If you&#8217;re not experienced with this glue, be careful, it&#8217;s just like Crazy Glue and sets up quickly and permanently. Gorilla glue was used for this also, staying clear of the hinged areas.\u00c2\u00a0 A little of this type of glue goes a long way.\u00c2\u00a0 The kit\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s directions are very clear and it assembled without a problem.\u00c2\u00a0 Again, be patient, test fit and mock it up. The last things to put on were the tires and knock offs.\u00c2\u00a0 I had painted the knock offs silver like the rims then washed them with thinned black paint.\u00c2\u00a0 The knock offs need to be test fitted and cleaned up if needed. A little wipe off with a soft, clean cloth and the model was complete.<br \/>\n<a title=\"Indy25 by dougcole2000, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/29474631@N04\/4958357794\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4101\/4958357794_b8a1273f65.jpg\" alt=\"Indy25\" width=\"500\" height=\"231\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nFigure 25<\/p>\n<p><strong>Summary:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All in all, you can have a good time with this kit. These old school kits can be taken for granted, but when you take the time to build one it&#8217;s a nice change.\u00c2\u00a0 There are lots of ways to add to this kit if you want to go into more detail.\u00c2\u00a0 As a box stock kit, it will look good in any collection.<\/p>\n<p>The front suspension was the hardest part.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s necessary to study the direction sheet and mock up before gluing. The entire build took about 25 hours spread out over a week\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s time. The driver or crewman that came with the kit weren\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t used. The driver would require a lot of cutting to make him fit. If you want to use the driver, have fun, but it&#8217;s going to take a lot of work (I thought his arms and body didn&#8217;t fit right and wouldn&#8217;t match up to the steering wheel).<\/p>\n<p>I like how this car looks now that it&#8217;s done. It&#8217;s true to the #2 difficulty rating and I think it would be a great first model or a father\/kid project.\u00c2\u00a0 Just remember to not get in a hurry.
