Prior to U.S. involvement in WWII, the military decided they needed a high mobility vehicle to get around the battle field. It needed a vehicle that was capable of both on and off-road driving.\u00c2\u00a0 After a competition between several companies, Willys-Overland won the competition and was awarded the contract to build what would be called \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Truck, Utility, \u00c2\u00bc ton, 4×4. If you listen to one story, GP (for General Purpose) was added to the end of the nomenclature which is where it is said says the term \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Jeep\u00e2\u20ac\u009d came from. The other group say the name came from the little pet in the Popeye cartoons named Eugene the Jeep. Either way the name Jeep took and held on. The Jeep was seen on every battlefield during World War II, from Africa to Europe to the Philippines and back. It served as command vehicles, recon vehicles, weapons carriers and ambulances.\u00c2\u00a0 And after the war when the military was drawn down to pre-war numbers the Jeep was sold as surplus to anyone who wanted them. From 1941 thru 1945 approximately 640,000 jeeps were produced, of which 30% of these were sent to Russia and England under the Lend-Lease act enacted by President Roosevelt to help those countries fight the Germans.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This kit can be built as either a civilian version complete with a surrey top or one of the four different military versions: a command vehicle, an ambulance with litter, a small arms carrier, or as a heavy weapons carrier.
