The French Caravelle jet airliner was the first short\/medium range commercial passenger plane to see operation. Produced by SNCASE (later SUD Aviation) its first flight took place in 1955 and began regular flights in 1959.\u00c2\u00a0 The Caravelle was such a successful design that they were even sold to the US market when United Airlines ordered 20 units.\u00c2\u00a0 The Caravelle design initiated the rear-mounted engine, swept-wing design that endures to this day.\u00c2\u00a0 As a testament to its engineering, the aircraft wasn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t retired until 2005.<\/p>\n
