Speed Racer was a Japanese anime series that found success in the USA as a TV cartoon series in 1967. It originated from a 1958 book and subsequent comic series which progressed into the TV cartoon and then was brought back into the spot light when it was returned as a movie in 2008. The adventures of the main character Gō Mifune (aka Speed Racer) and his mechanic Sparky were a clever adaption of the swagger of Elvis Presley and the gadgetry of James Bond. This made it especially popular with young boys and girls. Using his wits and driving skill he always wins one for the good guys. Who could resist that!

For the Modeler: This is the Speed Racer Mach V 1:25 Scale Polar Lights Model Kit # POL804. Polar Lights offered this kit at first as a snap together kit and now they have released a glue together kit with a detailed engine. It is a skill level 2 kit of 70+ pieces molded in white, chrome, clear, black vinyl tires, black screws and waterslide decals. The kit features super-detailing and includes optional saw blades, ion jacks and an aqua canopy.  The dimensions are; 7 ¼” L X 3 ¼” W X 1 ½” H. This kit has a few options that will change the dimensions such as the saws, 8 ¼” L X 2 ¼” W X 1 ½” H, and with the extended ion jacks, 7 ¼” L X 2 ¼” W X 3” H.

The Ford Mustang from the years of 1979 until 1993 was built on the platform known as the “Fox”. The fox body mustang was offered in many different versions. The popular LX model was a way for the consumer to get high performance without the high sticker price of the GT model. The LX had all of the power of the GT but none of the frills. In addition the LX coupe body style made for a lighter car. For the same reasons, the LX coupe was popular with state and some local police departments around the country. There were many changes made to the fox body Mustang from the previous, unsuccessful Mustang II. The original concept for the mustang was all about performance not found in the Mustang II but was incorporated into the fox body. Improvements such as the ’86 EFI (electric fuel injection) system and the “quad” shock system improved power and handling. The fox body style and new performance platforms made the fox body Mustang one of the most popular Mustangs of all time.

For the Modeler: This is a Revell Special Edition Series ’90 Mustang LX 5.0 Skill level 3 kit #85-4252 review. This kit contains 131 parts molded in white, chrome, transparent red, and clear. The kit’s waterslide decals are nicely done with stock and police versions and a nicely done instruction sheet. This kit features a detailed 5.0 liter V-8 engine, quad shock suspension system, police light bar, radio and rear spotlights. Finished dimensions are: Length: 7-1/4″, Width: 3″, Height: 2-3/8.”

Review and Photos by Tony Gibson Tony Gibson

Back in the 60s, the altered wheel base funny cars were big crowd pleasers.  These cars carried 65% of their weight in the rear end.  This gave them great traction, and gave the fans lots of excitement.  With the high powered engines, they became notorious for wheel stands at the starting line.  These cars also had altered wheelbase fiberglass bodies that gave them a funny look, which is where the name Funny Car came from.  Today, the Funny Car Class is still a fan favorite and are known for running the quarter mile in 5 seconds.

For the Modeler: This is the 1953 Studebaker “Miss Deal” Funny Car 1:25 Scale Revell Model Kit #85-7817. It is a skill level 2 kit molded in white and chrome and has 99 parts.  The two rear drag slicks have Race Master labeling molded in, and the fronts are Pirelli Front Runners and the name is molded into the tire.  The direction sheet is really old school and is easy to follow.  Water slide decals are included along with a sheet of thin, clear plastic for the windshield. Finished dimensions are: Length: 7¾”, Width: 2½”. Have fun and keep the glue off the windshield. – Tony
