The Hudson Hornet was produced by the Hudson Motor Car Company between 1951 and 1954 and then by American Motors Corporation (AMC), and marketed under the Hudson brand between 1955 and 1957. The first-generation Hudson Hornets featured a functional “step-down” design with a dropped floorpan and chassis. This gave the car a lower center of gravity that helped the car handle well, a bonus for racing. The Hornet’s lower and sleeker look was accentuated by streamlined styling, sometimes called “pontoon” styling. The car’s “unique, low slung appearance and silky handling earned Hudson an image that, for many buyers, eclipsed luxury marques like Cadillac.” The 1954 model year underwent a major square-lined redesign. This entailed extensive retooling because of the way the step-down frame wrapped around the passenger compartment. The front had a simpler grille that complemented the now-functional hood scoop and a new one-piece curved windshield, while the sides gained period-typical fender chrome accents, and the formerly sloped rear end was squared off. There was still no V8 engine available, but the 308 cu in six-cylinder was standard in Hornets and produced 160 hp, the racing-inspired 170 hp “Twin-H-Power” (dual carburetor) option was very popular. The Special was a fastback version of the 1954 Hudson Hornet favored by stock class drag racers in the 1960’s.

For the Modeler: This review covers the New Release of the 1954 Hudson Hornet Special from Moebius Models. This is Kit #1214 in their current catalog and is molded in 1/25 scale. While this is a New Release and some new tooling Moebius has previously released 1 a few different Hudson kits and this kit does share parts from those kits. The kit is Skill Level 3 for Moderate builders age 15 and up and requires glue and paint. Inside the box you get around 125 crisply molded parts in White, Clear, Clear Red, and Chrome with Vinyl tires and a Metal axle. The decals are waterslide. The instruction sheets for Moebius are unlike their competitions. You get highly detailed color pictures and detailed written instructions along with the typical picture assembly. On the back sheet Moebius offers actual Automotive paint code colors for factory paint and the two tone options and interior options to match. The motor is highly detailed and with very little work is contest ready as is. The Chassis and suspension is also detailed and multiple parts. The interior is a multiple part unit that is highly detailed with separate door panels for ease of detailing. The body is clean of blemishes and crisply molded. Overall size is: Length: 8-1/4”, Width: 3”, Height: 2-1/4”.

The F-Series series of light-duty and medium-duty trucks (Class 2-7) have been marketed and manufactured by Ford Motor Company since 1948. While most variants of the F-Series trucks are full-size pickup trucks, the F-Series also includes chassis cab trucks and commercial vehicles. The most popular version of the F-Series is the Ford F-150, produced in thirteen different generations. It has been the best-selling vehicle in the United States since 1981 and the best-selling pickup since 1977. The fifth generation of the Ford F-Series is a line of pickup trucks and commercial trucks that were produced by Ford from 1967 to 1972. Built on the same platform as the fourth generation F-series trucks, the fifth generation had sharper styling lines, a larger cab and greenhouse, and expanded engine options. Three trim levels were available during the production of the fifth generation F-series, though the names were changed in 1970. The “Base” trim became the “Custom” and the “Custom Cab” became the “Sport Custom” joining “Ranger” as optional levels of equipment and trim. Late in production the Ranger trim level was upgraded with the additional “Ranger XLT” option.

For the Modeler: This review covers the new release of the Moebius 1972 Sport Custom Ford Pickup. It is Kit #1220 in the current catalog. While a new release, this kit shares parts with other kits from the product line as Moebius has released a 1969, 1970 and 1 1971 Ford pickup all in different configurations. This is designated a Skill Level 3 kit (recommend for age 15 and up) and requires glue and paint for assembly. You will find almost 130 well molded parts in White, Chrome, Clear and Clear Red with Vinyl tires and Waterslide decals. Moebius instruction sheets are highly detailed with color photos and well written instructions and assembly diagrams. The buildup has a complete chassis with a V-8 motor. The interior is all separate and easy to detail. The body cab is one part with a multiple part bed. Assembly is straight forward. Details are crisp and with a little effort and some aftermarket parts you could very easily have a contest winner on your shelf.  Overall dimensions are: Length 8”, Width: 3-1/2”, Height: 2-1/4”.

Review and Photos by Steven Hardwick Steven Hardwick

The Mirage IIIE built in 1958 was one of the first jet aircraft to breach the Mach 2 barrier. Upgrades in the Mirage IIIE version, including a beefier fuselage and reinforced wings, helped improve the overall load capacity. Designed as a ground attack fighter it evolved nicely in the 30 yrs of service, with armament and an under-wing array of weapons. It also featured the legendary delta wing profile!

For the Modeler: This review covers the This Skill Level 2 (for ages 10 and up) Mirage IIIE Anniversary kit commemorating its 30 yrs of service (1964-1994) in the 1:48 Scale Italeri Model Kit #2674. It was re-released in 2009 with new parts from the original 000b 1980 ESCI kit. They are still available at some online retailers and auction sites.  It consists of 109 parts. The kit is molded in light gray on four sprues, one clear sprue, and one decal sheet (nine livery decal versions are included).  It also has a nice seven page folding instruction sheet featuring three pages of how to build and four pages of color and build options.    The completed dimensions are: 11¾” Length  x  7″ Wide  x  5 1/2″ Tall (wheels to top of tail).

Covered in this Review:  If you want to perfect your build; basic construction; preparing parts for better finishing; extensive paint and finishing information; adhesive selections and applications; cockpit construction and detailing; decal preparation and application; finishing sequences; using clear coats for decal application; pilot seat repair discussed; landing gear and tire finishing; historical information; exhaust area painting technique; canopy detailing; version decal selection, detailing the landing gear bays; instruction clarifications and corrections; using setting solutions for great looking decals; camo finishing techniques; version considerations; altered assembly sequences for fitment; nose section weight aids; masking methods explained; intake detailing; adding black washes for realism; identifying and repairing seams; are all fully examined in this tutorial 19 page, full-color Step-by-Step review.
