Snark

Review and Photo by Bill Pierce Bill Pierce Thumbnail

The SM-67 Snark was an early cruise missile developed by the Northrop Company. As an early intercontinental missile, the Snark could carry a thermonuclear warhead to it’s intended target. The Snark, in use from 1958 through 1961, was deployed by the US Air Force’s Strategic Air Command. With the development of Inter-Continental Ballistic Missiles (ICBM’s) the Snark was rendered obsolete in 1961.

For the Modeler: This review is of the Revell #85-7810 Scale 1:81 Northrop Snark Missile SM-62. The 1:81 scale kit is a skill level 2 kit. The kit comes in units, the instructions, the bagged molded in red kit parts and the decals. The instructions are well laid out. The kit parts are well molded, with a minimum of clean up. This particular kit has raised panel lines and raised lines indicating decal placement locations for most of the decals. I built my kit straight out of the box and was quite pleased with the result. The indentations for the side booster rockets allow for a range of placement, so I needed to take some special care to ensure the Snark would sit correctly on the launch platform. Painting was the biggest issue as all the plastic is molded in red, and as can be seen in the photo not all the finished model is red, so getting an even paint coverage without the  red showing through takes some preparation and care.
