The W900 is a Kenworth Class 8 truck known for its long-nose style. Although more aerodynamic models, such as the T600, and succeeding versions have been introduced for fleet use the stylish W900 remains in production due to its particular popularity with owner-operators. The W900 was a gradual introduction, retaining many features of its predecessors which also continued to be sold alongside it in the early 1960s. The engine sizes for the W900 range from 9 liters to 16 liters, with ratings up to 625-horsepower. The W900 has front axles from 12,000 to 22,000-lb ratings, and rear axles from 23,000-lb single to 58,000-lb tandems. The “W” stands for “Worthington”. Breakdowns do happen, and when they happen to the biggest semis you can expect to see a large wrecker doing the recovery. Many times it is the Kenworth W-900 getting it back to the shop. These Big Rig Wreckers are outfitted with cranes and equipment that allow the trucks to haul a fully loaded semi and trailer to a repair facility. These are massive machines and can range in price from $500,000 and up depending on optional equipment.

For the modeler: This review covers the recent Re-release (Re-Pop) of the Kenworth W900 Wrecker by Revell in 1/25 scale. Although it’s not really described as such, this is a 2-N-1 kit. You could also just build it as a day cab, as those parts are in the kit 1 too.  This is kit #85-2510 in the current catalog. Revell rates this as a Skill Level 5 for advanced builders and it contains 411 parts molded in White, Chrome, Clear and Vinyl and has Chain and Cording. The decals are waterslide and have a sharp color quality. The instruction sheet is typical of the Revell style in book format. This is a previously released kit and can be found in multiple releases in the past, this kit is unchanged beyond decals. For the build you get a very detailed kit with a full motor and chassis that needs full assembly. The interior is well detailed and the dash is a decal which makes detailing easy. The cab and hood are solid parts but the wrecker bed needs full assembly. This is a complicated build that requires time for part assemblies to dry, you cannot rush this build for the best results. Overall finished dimensions are: Length: 14″, Width: 4-7/16″, Height: 6″.
