Formula One cars are the fastest road course racing cars in the world, owing to very high cornering speeds achieved through the generation of large amounts of aerodynamic downforce. Formula One cars race at speeds of up to 220 mph with engines currently limited in performance to a maximum of 15,000 RPM. The cars are capable of lateral acceleration in excess of five G in corners. The performance of the cars is very dependent on electronics – although traction control and other driving aids have been banned since 2008 – and on aerodynamics, suspension and tires. The formula has radically evolved and changed through the history of the sport. To comply with the drastic regulation changes that took effect starting in the 1989 F-1 racing season, the Ferrari team brought out their revolutionary F189 type 640 machine. Designer John Barnard and his staff successfully developed a unique but very effective racer. The aesthetic body styling, resembles a vase when viewed from above. It is the result of extensive wind tunnel testing and is said to provide better airflow.

For the modeler: This review covers the release of the Tamiya 1/20 Scale Ferrari F189 Portuguese G.P. (late version) Formula 1 Race Car. This is Kit #20024 in their current catalog. Tamiya continually releases this kit and it is readily available. The 1 Japanese companies do not use Skill Levels but this would be a Skill Level 4. There are around 90 parts molded in Red, Black, White, Smoke Clear and Rubber tires with screws. It has a removable cowling. There is complete engine detail. A driver figure is included. Waterslide decals are included but are generic without Cigarette promotions. The overall dimensions are: Length: 8-1/2”, Width: 4”, Height: 2-1/4”.
