The French Caravelle jet airliner was the first short/medium range commercial passenger plane to see operation. Produced by SNCASE (later SUD Aviation) its first flight took place in 1955 and began regular flights in 1959.  The Caravelle was such a successful design that they were even sold to the US market when United Airlines ordered 20 units.  The Caravelle design initiated the rear-mounted engine, swept-wing design that endures to this day.  As a testament to its engineering, the aircraft wasn’t retired until 2005.

For the Modeler: This review covers the Lindberg Caravelle French Airliner 1:96 Scale Model Kit #HL513.  Round2 rates this kit a skill level 3 for advanced modelers. There are 120 pieces on three trees molded in white and clear plastic.  This package recalls the era when model manufacturers competed by packing as much detail into their designs as possible.  This 000b model has been around since the seventies in Lindberg kits but this unique iteration features a clear plastic port side fuselage for a see-through display.  The entire interior is visible from the port side including the forward, aft, and a fully detailed passenger cabin.  There are also six passenger and crew figures along with an aircraft boarding ramp. Additionally, this kit has working elevators, ailerons and stabilizers and fully functional landing gear and flaps.  This model comes with upgraded Cartograph decals and a four page book-style instruction sheet with paint callouts.  As a bonus, this kit is “Made in the USA.”  Overall dimensions are: Length: 13”, Wingspan: 14”, Height 3½”.  The display stand is 4” in Diameter and Height is 3½”.
