Imagine you’re back in the late 1940’s and early 1950’s. World War II is becoming a distant memory, and the scuffle in Korea has a little ways to go before they sign a truce. America has resumed a normal daily life and prosperity abounds.    We ended WWII by using Atomic weapons on Japan to force them to surrender.  Most of humanity saw the destructive force of those weapons and most had hoped that they would never be needed again. Suddenly, one of our former Allies in WWII is setting their sights on us. The USSR has developed their own nuclear weapons, and is amassing thousands of them. The United States determined that it had no choice but to follow suit, arming itself with thousands of nuclear weapons to match the Soviet Union. Both sides were now poised to see who was king of the hill. The Cold War had begun!

From 1984 through 1989 NBC ran a TV series called “Miami Vice” starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas in the roles of Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs.  For me, the two biggest stars of this series were the cars that the characters drove.  For the first two years they drove a black Ferrari Daytona GTS4, which was actually a kit car built on a 1980 Corvette frame and driveline, and a white 1986 Ferrari   Testarosa, which replaced the Daytona after it was blown up during the Season Three premier.  This was due to a lawsuit brought by Ferrari and in return for not using the kit cars anymore, Ferrari donated the white Testarosas used in the show.  White was not normally an available color but Ferrari felt that it would show up better during night time filming than the black Daytona had.

For the Modeler: This is the Ferrari Testarosa 1:24 Scale Monogram Model Kit #85-2910. A skill level 2 kit it has 96 pieces. The pieces are molded in; yellow, chrome, and clear with black vinyl tires and waterslide decals. Although these kits are no longer on the shelves they can still be found at online auctions and the newly released Miami Vice version Revell #85-4264 is nearly identical. The finished kit is 7.375” in length.

Covered in this Review:  If you want to perfect your build; basic construction; preparing parts for better finishing; adhesive selections and applications; alternate assembly sequence suggestions for fit and ease of finishing; paint selections and application; suspension construction; using black wash for detailing; identifying and repairing seam lines; flash repair; interior detailing; engine construction, wiring, painting, and detailing; the importance of test fitting; decal preparation and application; bleed-through protection; making scratch-built  wired distributors and fuel injection lines; using “the Detailer” for highlights; part orientation notes; instruction errors; engine detailing considerations; suspension detailing; “Sharpie” detailing; shock mount modifications; driveshaft modifications for fit; exhaust fit problems; flocking the interior; scratch-built shifter; using spare decals and photo etch parts for enhancement; foiling the trim; making realistic side markers; scratch-building and aligning mesh grills; and using homemade black wash for detailing; are all fully examined in this extensive, pictorial 14 page, full-color Step-by-Step review.
