The Chevy SSR is a pleasing blend of two different automotive eras and it combines high tech features with retro styling. With its retractable metal roof and the 50s “fat fendered†styling, it is right in tune with today’s trends. Under the hood is a powerful V-8 which sends the SSR, Super Sport Roadster, from zero to 60 mph in just 7 seconds. When everyone is looking to make their own statement, the Chevy SSR lets us go all the way. It is based on an SUV chassis with huge wheels and tires; 19†in the front and 20†in the back. The all steel retractable roof comes down with a push of a button and only takes 20 seconds. The Generation III V-8 produces 300 horsepower and has a really sweet sound any enthusiast will appreciate.
For the Modeler: This is a skill level 2, 1:25 scale kit featuring 105 pieces molded in white, transparent red, and clear pieces and chrome plated parts and soft black tires. You can build this model with a retractable roof which can be displayed in the up or down position. A separate bed cover also makes a nice addition to this model.

The 1957 Corvette came with a 283 cid v8 engine, putting out a whopping 185 horse power. There were other options such as a double 4 barrel carb set up and a “Ramjet” fuel injection system. With fuel injection system option the ‘57 ‘Vette would put out 250-283 hp and go 0-60 in 7.2 seconds. Only 240 of the 6,339 made that year came with the fuel injection option. The ‘57 ‘Vette was very popular in hot rod and drag circles. Many of these cars found their way to the strip as so called “gasser” cars. Many of the ‘57 ‘Vettes were also built into personal hot rods. Until this day the ‘57 Corvette is a popular with Corvette enthusiasts.
For the Modeler: This is a 1:25 scale, skill level 2, AMT/Ertl ’57 Corvette street machine kit. One big difference between this kit and the real cars is the engine. The kit includes a nicely detailed 454 cid engine and a four speed transmission. This would be more like the garage hot rod or a true “gasser” build.
This ’57 Corvette kit comes with some nicely molded and detailed parts. Parts such as chrome plated engine parts and Cragars street star wheels. Interior was also nicely done. In this kit I found a separate frame from the floor pan along with little to no flashing, pin marks, or mold lines. Surprisingly, for an older AMT kit, I found that preparations for painting were not as time consuming as I thought it would be. However I did run into some small issues: 1.) the rear valance had a small fit issue, leaving a gap to be filled. But this issue is not noticeable due to the rear bumper piece covers the area well. 2.) The decal sheet had very minimal options. 3.) Front inner fenders (included in kit) will not fit with engine headers provided. Other than those small issues this kit was a good build. I built mine to resemble a home garage built hot rod. I added some mild modifications to the kit during build, such as omitting the rear wheelie bars and lowering the suspension about 2-3 scale inches. I swapped the wheels with parts box wheels and tires and wired and plumbed the engine area as well.
All-in-all this is a nicely done kit for AMT/ERTL considering some of their other kits with molded in suspension and exhaust. I enjoyed this build and I recommend it for any ‘Vette or gasser fan to purchase and have some styrene fun. I liked this kit enough that I have another one of the ’57 ‘Vette street machine to build that is already painted and ready to assemble.

American Motors introduced their new subcompact to compete directly with the Chevrolet Vega and Ford Pinto in 1971. Because of the Gremlin’s unusual shape and truncated rear end, folks scoffed and sarcastically asked “Where’s the rest of the car?” Well, AMC had the last laugh as Consumer Reports magazine tested the Gremlin against the Vega and Pinto, and rated it better than both the latter two. The Gremlin has become not only an American icon, but a cult classic as well. Originally available with only the 232c.i. six, it later became available with AMC’s 304c.i. V8 in the “X” package along with a “Levi’s” package with simulated denim interior. This kit represents the “X” Levi’s edition, and can be built either stock or drag.
For the Modeler: I knew this was a re-pop of 38-year old tooling, so be prepared for fit and finish issues. This is a 1:25, scale skill level 1 kit molded in white and transparent blue and clear pieces with chrome parts and black vinyl tires. It includes instruction, waterslide decals and nostalgia “AMC Gremlin†bumper sticker. It can be built factory stock or as a drag version.
Covered in this Review: This is a pretty easy kit to make but if you want to perfect your build, basic construction; detailed engine assembly and finishing; use of buffing metalizers for realistic finishes; picking out details with markers; identifying ejector pin marks; paint selection and detailing the “denim†interior; correcting warped parts; using foil to highlight body script; realistic headlight techniques; using black washes to enhance detail; using foil to finish the body trim; making realistic taillights; identifying race version parts; finishing realistic bumperettes; decal application; are all fully examined in this extensive 12 page, full-color Step-by-Step review.
