Back in the day, it was not uncommon to buy a car from a dealership, alter it a little, and then race it at the drag strip or abandoned airport. The 312 cubic inch, 245HP V8 Ford was a favorite against any Detroit brand. Ford reinvented the Custom 2 door with a longer wheel-base and lower stance.

For the Modeler: This is a Revell skill level 3 Special Edition 2 in 1, ’57 Ford Custom kit in 1/25th scale.  Kit includes 129 pieces, molded in white, clear, clear red, and chrome. It Includes tires without brand logos (4) and rear racing slicks (2). The kit also includes great water slide decals with options for two different name designs, M&H tire decals for the racing slicks, and white wall decals for the stock option.  The instruction sheet is laid out well with clear instructions for part placement location and lettered paint codes.  Options are given for factory stock or an altered racing package. This was a whole new kit for Revell, the first time the ‘57 Ford Custom has been released.  The tooling is amazing, very clean and zero flashing.  There are fine parts for fuel lines and many detailing upgrades that will make it look more realistic.  The plastic was a lot thinner and lighter in weight which made everything cleaner and crisper on the parts tree and on the body.  Overall, this was a very impressive kit. Keep the glue off the windshield!

I don’t know where you live, but here in Michigan, USA even in the month of March, it still looks like this; grey skies, snow everywhere, and the ever-present Chevy plow truck in every parking lot, drive, and going from one to another. From October through March every year they bring out these old workhorses for snow removal so we can open up the driveways and get things moving again

For the Modeler: This skill level 2 Revell #85-7222 kit is 1:24 scale and consists of 103 highly detailed plastic pieces molded in white, clear and chrome plated pieces. This kit also features separate frame pieces, soft black tires, chrome-plated parts and decals with stock and custom graphics. After a long hiatus, we finally have a classic GM pickup back on the shelves! Back in the spring of 2012 I had heard rumors of Revell’s upcoming re-release of their ’77 short box pickup, which was exciting enough, but finding out that an all new snow plow would come with it, was icing on the cake. GM made millions of GMC pickups from 1973-1980. Unfortunately, most of the kits that replicated them were stepside models, with just a couple of “smooth side” versions. Until now, finding those kits would cost you a pretty penny, If you could find one. With the re-release of Revell’s kit, the void is filled for the off road, short box truck lovers in the modeling world. You can also see more customizing ideas here for this model from Tom Schaefer’s previous SnapShot review at this page.

Covered in this Review: If you want to perfect your build, basic construction; paint and adhesive selections and applications; modified assembly sequence for easier construction; instruction errors identified; modifying attachment points for assembly; mold sinks located; using markers and craft paints for detailing; detailing the under carriage with metalizer paints; weatherizing with pastel powders; finishing tires for realism; engine detailing; stripping chrome form plated parts for realism; adding strength to the exhaust manifolds; snow assembly and detailing; part orientation for assembly; driving light detailing; plow finishing suggestions; detailing the grill; bed accessory and mirror modifications; and using Alclad Chrome Lacquer for finishing are all fully examined in this 16 page, full-color Step-by-Step review.

Wedell Williams Incorporated was organized during 1928 by pilot/designer James Robert Wedell and millionaire Harry Palmerson Williams.  The Louisiana firm offered charter services, passenger flights, and flying lessons.  They also branched into manufacturing, starting with sport types, then they ventured into producing racing aircraft.  During 1931, Jimmy Wedell achieved a credible second place in the Thompson Trophy event, better only by Lowell Bayles in the Gee Bee “Z”.  Among those impressed by the performance was Roscoe Turner, who contracted for a brand new Wedell Williams Racer.  Actually, since members of the W-W group were occupied with their own efforts, a major portion of the fabrication was conducted by Don Young, Turners ace mechanic.  Since formal drawings for previous racers did not exist, most dimensions were obtained by direct measurement of a nearby aircraft.  The finished machine was test flown by Jimmy Wedell and accepted by Roscoe Turner.  However, at the insistence of Harry Williams, a second test was performed with ballast added to the seat, simulating the extra weight of Turner.  During a high speed pass, one wing failed and Wedell just managed to escape by parachute before the aircraft was totally destroyed.  A second, strengthened aircraft passed all tests and became the famous 121 “Gilmore Red Lion”.

For the Modeler: This Williams Brothers Model Products kit is 1:32 scale and consists of ~75 highly detailed plastic pieces molded in grey and one clear canopy piece. The radial engine is multi-piece construction for added details. The fuselage features recessed panel lines and the kit comes with colorful waterslide decals for three versions; NR61Y, No 121 ‘Gilmore Red Lion’, NR278V, No 44 ‘Miss Patterson’ and NR536V, No 92 ‘Miss New Orleans’ and well-Illustrated instructions. Size: Length: 8-3/4″ & Wingspan: 9-3/4″. This kit went together very well with the exception of the decals.  It would have been fun watching these beauties fly around pylons in the 1930’s……..  Keep learning and have fun.
