At the beginning of the Twentieth century, steamships were the fastest means of travel across the mighty oceans.  The White Star Line, a British company wanting to be the leader in that endeavor designed three new ships for carrying passengers from England to America. These ships, the Olympic, the Titanic, and the Gigantic were to be the largest ships ever built at the time. These ships were then outfitted with the most eloquent furnishings available at the time. The interiors rivaled the most luxurious building, castles and homes in Europe.  In 1909 the keel was laid for the Titanic and the Olympic simultaneously and then on May 31, 1911 they were launched within 4 hours of each other.  For Royal Mail Ship Titanic (RMS) Titanic though, the luxuries were not to be enjoyed for long, for she started her maiden voyage on April 10, 1912 and on April 14, 1912 at approximately 11:35 pm she struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic. Two hours and forty minutes later she was gone, along with some 1500 passengers and crew who thought the RMS Titanic was truly “unsinkable”.

For the Modeler: This kit is a 100th anniversary edition of the RMS Titanic in 1:400 scale. It consists of 262 parts molded in white and black. Finished length is over 26 inches long. The instruction booklet is quite detailed, but lacks written text so diagrammatic interpretation is necessary. This kit goes together very well.  The length of some of the pieces tends to cause some assembly issues but they can be overcome by using superglue instead of model cement.  The instructions lead you in building sub-assemblies and then attaching them which makes for a better built model and also makes it so much easier to detail it.

Covered in this Review: Basic construction; color selections; build strategies; prop shaft symmetry; painting the hull; aligning the decks; installing guy wires; adhesive selections and applications; mold marks identified; tricks for installing the railing and stack guy wires; ladder modifications; rigging line tension; decal application and suggestions; are all fully examined in this extensive 18 page, full-color Step-by-Step review.

This was the car that started the import invasion. It was an engineering marvel for the time that included simplicity, reliability and economy. Young people (especially students) needed a car like that so they bought them by the millions. Student loans were what you got from your parents so they packed up their VW’s and headed off to college; and concerts. They would stuff these compacts and make weekend run driving non-stop for hundreds of miles to see their favorite band. They loved to “personalize” their rides with poster paint and thus was born; the “Flower Power” Bug.

For the Modeler: This kit owes its origins to a 1968 release from Revell as the 3n1 kit H:1264:200. That kit included the “Inch Pincher Too” Rally car and some of those parts are still offered here. Released again in 1998 as the 60’s Beetle; this “Luv Bug” is cuter than ever and is still readily available at garage sales and auction sites. This kit’s tooling has been around a long time so there is a lot of flash on the parts to deal with. This is a skill level 2 kit with 115 pieces molded in white and clear pieces with chrome plated parts and black vinyl tires.

Covered in this Review: Basic construction; preparing old decals for use; body seam and pin mark locations and corrections; removing unwanted chrome plating; using Micro Mask; altering the build sequence for proper finishing; adhesive selections and applications; dashboard finishing and detailing; prepping realistic turn signals; finishing bright work with a Sharpie; dealing with sheet type decals; imitating correct luster finishes; painting and clear coating the body and running boards; grouping similar parts for paint; prepping and gluing chrome parts; clear parts adhesives; handling fragile parts; making , using and applying black washes; window modifications for better viewing the interior; window installation techniques and alternatives; detailed suspension construction; interior detailing and color selection; identifying unused kit parts; stock build considerations and corrections; finishing the undercarriage; realistic looking wheels; prepping the tires; detailed engine construction and finishing; all major parts are identified; scratch building the exhaust tips; mating the body to the chassis; are all fully examined in this extensive 25 page, full-color Step-by-Step review.

In the drag racing world, they don’t come any bigger than “Big Daddy” Don Garlits. He helped make changes for safer racing and his designs live on in the modern era. His 30+ year career brought him numerous wins, championships, speed records and innovations that make drag racing so popular today. He is a legend to fans, old and new. Swamp Rat XXX appeared in 1986 when Big Daddy set Top Fuel records at the Florida Gator National. With the new canopy/closed cockpit design, top speeds were over 272 mph in the quarter mile. This set the bar for the competition on the two lane blacktop.

For the Modeler: You can still find plenty these kits on the auction sites or at garage sales. If you happen to have one, we’ll show you how to perfect this build. The Revell Don Garlits Swamp Rat XXX Dragster was released in 1987 in 1/25th scale. It is rated a skill level one kit but it takes a lot of work; a two rating might be more appropriate. It has 79 pieces, molded in black, chrome and clear with vinyl Goodyear drag racing tires and nice looking decals that appear to be fairly accurate to the photo on the box. Included is a replica of Don Garlits wearing a cap and holding his helmet.

Covered in this Review: Basic construction; modified assembly sequences; paint color choices; engine, hoses, cockpit, battery detailing; making and using black washes; using Sharpie markers for detail; installing the engine/trans/rear end as a single unit; using foil for realistic detail; adhesive selections for specific applications; tire/wheel lettering and detailing; wheelie bar finishing; installing and detailing the cockpit glass; decal preparation and placement; figure painting and detailing; are all fully examined in this 10 page, full-color Step-by-Step review.
