Drag racers loved the ’57 Ford Custom because it was a simple no-frills car that was easy to modify. Its long body and low-slung chassis made it perfect for short straight-course races. The exceptionally light 2-door model came with a 245 horsepower V-8 – more than enough power to boost the ’57 to victory after victory. With racing slicks, the Custom could beat most cars of the day in straight drag.

For the Modeler: The 1957 Ford kit was worth the wait.  This was one of the best kits that I have built in years.  Everything from the molding to chrome, clear parts etc. were perfect.  This was the fastest that a model has gone together for me in a long time.  I have to say that Revell really hit a home run with the 57 kit.  The only item that I feel that Revell could have done was to supply white wall tires instead of white wall decals. This is a Revell “Special Edition” 1957 Ford Custom 2 ‘n 1 Model Kit in 1/25th scale. It can be built into a stock or drag version but is Revell skill level 3 kit for ages 12 and up. The kit includes 129 pieces molded in white, transparent red, and clear with chrome parts and soft rubber tires. This kit features drag racing slicks and suspension parts plus a separate frame member and bench style front seat.

Covered in this Review: Basic construction; engine assembly and authentic detailing; wiring the motor; adhesive choice applications; an alternate paint schema for the undercarriage; authentic gear carrier paint;  period correct interior and exterior color selection; pin mark locations; adding homemade valve stems; body mold line locations; using foil as a paint mask and black washing are all fully examined in this 8 page, full-color Step-by-Step review.

In the 1970s, custom vans were all the rage.  Tom Daniel couldn’t resist the opportunity to exercise his design skills and create the ultimate custom van.  It’s not only hip, it’s fast, too!  With a blown big block motor perched right next to the driver and big slicks in back, the Vandal is more than cool.  Check out the custom interior, a perfect place to relax after a speed run.  While many of Tom’s designs were ultra-wild creations, the Vandal could actually be practical.  The swing open side door provides easy entry into the cool interior just right for hanging out.  The interior is tricked out with a swag lamp and 70’s era posters.

For the Modeler: This is a skill level 2 kit with 84 pieces and features parts molded in white and clear resin with chrome detailing, complete super mini bike, separate swing open side and rear doors, colorful custom decals and soft black tires. This kit is not very clean, it has a lot of flashing on the trees, but individual parts fit together quite well for the most part.  It requires a little bit of model assembly knowledge because it needs tools to clean the parts.  Glue is also required for assembly.  The parts are unpainted.  If you would like a colorful model, you will need to paint all of the un-chromed pieces.  The instruction sheet does a good job suggesting colors for painting, or you can go on your own as I have done on this build.

Covered in this Review: Basic construction; color and adhesive selections; Engine detailing using a wired distributor; chassis detailing and color choices; interior detailing with vintage poster art; construction requirements for body fit; simulating wood details; realistic brake lights using nail polish; fender alignment; construction sequence; minibike construction and detailing; are all fully examined in this 10 page, full-color Step-by-Step review.

The Gee Bees, perhaps the best-known of all “Golden Age” American racing aircraft, were produced by the five Granville Brothers, from which the name “Gee Bee” was derived. Beginning in 1929 with biplanes, the Granvilles soon turned to construction of low-wing sport aircraft, with a sideline excursion into a canard experimental machine.  Competition types were the next step, and as the result of early successes, work began during early spring of 1932 on the R-1 and R-2 racers, which were structurally quite similar, and the R-1 was ready by August!  A Pratt & Whitney Wasp Sr. engine of approximately 800 horsepower, and targeted for the closed loop course racing, powered the R-1.

For the Modeler: This Williams Brothers Model Products kit consists of ~70 highly detailed plastic pieces molded in grey and one clear canopy piece. The radial engine is multi-piece construction for added details. The fuselage features recessed panel lines and the kit comes with colorful waterslide decals for two versions and well-Illustrated instructions. Size: Length: 6-5/8″ (168.27mm) & Wingspan: 9-1/4″ (234.95mm).

Covered in this Review: Basic construction; glue, paint and material selections; seam, sink and pin mark identification and repairs; prop finishing with Alclad; engine detail colors and black washes; using brass tubing for pushrods; detailing the exhaust stacks; copper spark plug wire augmentation for detail; detailing the cockpit with wood grain, Alclad, and accent paint; wheel/tire paint selection; paint masking techniques for finish; canopy floor polish treatment; clamping methods; using frisket film for masking; decal preparation and application with setting solutions; and detailed rigging instructions; are all fully examined in this 20 page, full-color Step-by-Step review.
