In the final year of the Fox-bodied Ford Mustang, the SVT Cobra was a special edition designed by Ford’s Special Vehicle Team.  The Fox body had been in production since 1979.  This was the hottest version ever made with 240 horsepower at 5,000 rpm.  It could generate quarter mile times in the low 14 seconds.  With only 5,000 cars produced, it has turned into a collector’s car.  The SVT Cobra has the popular Ford 5.0 liter engine with special tuned parts such as GT-40 cylinder heads, roller rocker arms, large valves and high end flow intake manifold.  The suspension was upgraded also with the recalibrated shocks and springs, rear disc brakes, and 17” aluminum wheels.

For the Modeler: This is a skill level 2 kit with 81 pieces molded in white and clear plastic with a chrome tree, soft tires, and factory marking decals. This kit features a separate instrument pod and driving lights.  This kit is very clean, has very little flashing on the trees, and individual parts fit together quite well.  It requires a little bit of model assembly knowledge because it needs tools to clean the parts.  Glue is also required for assembly.  The parts are unpainted.  If you would like a colorful model, you will need to paint all of the un-chromed pieces.  The instruction sheet does a good job suggesting colors for painting, or you can go on your own as I have done on this build.

Covered in this review: Even though this is a pretty trouble-free kit there are a few things you should know in order to perfect this build. Basic kit construction; engine, interior and exterior color choices; chassis detailing and build sequence; interior paint and detailing; detailing for realistic headlights, driving and taillights; and the use of fingernail polish colors; are all fully examined in this 9 page, full-color Step-by-Step review.

The 1950 Oldsmobile 88 is widely considered to be the first factory hot rod produced. With its powerful overhead 303c.i. V-8 engine cranking out 135hp, and lightweight body design, it was a force to be reckoned with. It was very popular with racing enthusiasts at the time, running the quarter-mile in 18.9 seconds, unheard of in 1950. It wasn’t uncommon for these cars to be driven straight from the showroom to the race track!

For the Modeler: This new tool model from Revell can turn out to be a prize winner for your shelf but there are some things you’ll need to know BEFORE you put the decals on. This kit is molded in white, red, and clear plastic and contains 135 parts, including black rubber tires and metal axle pins and exhaust tips. Flash is practically non-existent.

Covered in this Review: Basic kit construction and paint selection for the engine, interior and exterior; starter location; engine highlighting and detailing; detailing the undercarriage and brakes; modifying the frame for engine fit; straightening a warped part; repairing ejection pin marks; using metalizer paints for detail; engine bay appointments; business coupe considerations; body seam identification; glass handling; using foil for trim;  correct side mirror location; instruction errors; hood sink corrections; detailing the hood and trunk emblems;  are all fully examined in this 10 page, full-color Step-by-Step review.

Arnie Beswick was as drag racer in the 60s and early 70s.  He was called “the Farmer” mostly because his “day job” was as a farmer from Illinois.  He is probably the best know Pontiac drag racer ever.  In 1969 he campaigned three GTO Judges, in three different categories. The subject of this kit was Arnie’s Super Judge funny car.  He also used this car for a lot of match racing and did pretty well at it. His equipment and all of his cars were destroyed in a fire at his shop, which was on his farm, in 1972.  He was uninsured and was unable to continue to compete after that as he couldn’t afford to replace everything.

For the Modeler: This kit is a Round 2 reissue of an MPC release of Arnie’s GTO Judge.  As is typical of MPC kits it has quite a bit of flash, part fitment is sometimes not the best and several important details are incorrect when compared to the actual car.  When I was first looking at the kit I thought that much of it looked similar to the Model King reissue of the Cougar funny car.  So I grabbed mine off the shelf and discovered that the chassis, wheels and tires, and other assorted parts are directly from the Cougar funny car kit.  MPC added a supercharged Pontiac engine and the GTO body.

You’ll quickly find that it’s no joke trying to put together a contest worthy funny car, so if you want to perfect that build there are some things you’ll need to know. Although this is a great base to start with we’ll show you how to make this kit compliant to the real car with donor parts and other changes. Sponsor decal considerations; correcting the decal layout for accuracy; Assisting with instruction errors; correct engine color selection; using Alclad for Lexan to correct chrome issues; engine detailing; build sequence modification for proper painting; correct wheel finish methods; dealing with flash issues; squaring up the chassis; driveshaft alteration for fit; enhancing the headers fro realism; Drive belt correction; gauge enhancement with aftermarket parts; preparing the stock body for funny car adaptation; exterior, interior paint and finishing techniques and colors; decal installation; interior tin modifications for fit; correcting the body prop rod; are all fully examined in this 15 page, full-color Step-by-Step review.
