They say the United States was built on transportation innovations. Part of that rich history includes the automobile, and specifically in racing. NASCAR is a big part of that with many different manufacturers participating over the decades but none made more of a dramatic impact than Chrysler in 1969. The “Big 3” were at war with each other to develop the fastest car one could purchase from a dealer and in that year Chrysler won big with the Dodge Daytona.

For the modeler:     The 2012 Revell Muscle release of this particular kit by Revell has a lot of detail that I will go into later but the first thing I noticed was the thickness of the plastic – it’s thick! This is a good thing in my mind, it makes for a more solid body that is less apt to twist or get damaged, especially in the windshield post area. It also gives the builder more material to work with when sanding parts so they fit better. Fortunately this isn’t all that necessary as the body parts fit together very well. Installing photo-etch parts; body preparation; part/sprue tree removal; detailing the air deflectors; heavy chrome corrections; fit technique for the interior panels; adhesive selection; hood display options; transmission fitment modifications; decal strategy and tire recommendations; are all fully examined in this 6 page full-color Step-by-Step review.

Ford’s Mustang was undoubtedly the original Pony Car. Its unmistakable appearance is beautiful whether in stock, custom or racing form.  Bred from pure racing intentions; the legend of Carroll Shelby lives on today in the heart of Ford’s new Mustangs.

For the modeler: For the modeler, this skill level 2 kit is very clean, has very little flashing on the trees, and individual parts fit together quite well. There are 117 pieces molded in white, clear and a tree of chrome parts. This kit has an opening hood and detailed engine, metal exhaust tips, and decal stripe for light or dark body colors. The great thing about this kit is that every part fit right there was no trimming or modifying for fit. The parts are unpainted.  If you would like a colorful model, you will need to paint all of the un-chromed pieces.  The instruction sheet does a good job suggesting colors for painting, or you can go on your own as I have done on this build. Even though this kit is a dream to assemble there are few things you should to perfect the build before you begin. Adhesive selection; engine color selection; decal preparation; chassis detailing; altered suspension construction sequences; window trim methods; gluing metal parts; are all fully examined in this 9 page full-color Step-by-Step review.

If you have one of these vintage motorcycle kits or you plan to get one – it’s your lucky day! These excellent kits, issued in the 80’s and 90’s are still available at online auction sites and garage sales near you at pretty reasonable prices. In addition, you can perfect your build by avoiding any issues before they come up with the full review available below. The instructions are included so you can build this kit if you don’t have already them.

For the modeler: Released in 1981, the Revell 1/8th scale Harley Davidson California Highway Patrol Motorcycle kit is loaded with parts to make this a great shelf model or a great start for customizing. In big scale this model is large (12” long) and shows off the detail well. The kit comes with rubber tires and hose, and is molded in black, chrome and clear parts. The box rates this for “ages ten to adult” but due to its many small parts and skill level required to assemble the kit correctly I’d rate it a skill level 3 kit.  As for mold quality, the black parts didn’t have a lot of flash to remove but the chrome parts had a lot of flash and issues with some of the chrome easily rubbing off and overall poor plating of many of the parts. Aside from these issues; cable preparation; chrome removal; detailing the engine with a Sharpie; “inflating” the tires; the use of metalizers for finishing; squaring up the frame; reinforcing the cable attachment points; correcting the rear fender joint; instruction errors; correcting the tank gauge decal; modifying the flashers to fit into their bezels are all fully examined in this 11 page full color Step-by-Step review.
