RoR Project PC2010 – Orange Spice
Figure 4

I’ve spent the past couple weeks working on my latest Indy 500 Pace Car creation and the results were very rewarding. I watched the race today which was very exciting at the end and I found that most of the real action in that race comes from the pit stops.

All together this was a fun kit to convert to the modern race day classic and I will continue to add Pace Car models as they are completed.

A Tom Daniel classic, the Tijuana Taxi, has been reissued by Revell in kit #85-4261 under the Monogram label. This 1/24 scale freelance hot rod made its first appearance on hobby shop shelves in 1969. Revell brought back the original box art which graces the standard-size Revell box

For the Modeler: My completed Tijuana Taxi had a much rougher appearance than the box art – exactly the look I was going after! With a bit of weathering and de-chroming a few parts, this Taxi looks much more like something you would find south of the border. This kit is molded in clear, orange, and chrome-plated orange plastic. Although this kit is new tooling, resulting in very little flash, it faithfully reproduces the original parts. Also included are four vinyl tires and a colorful decal sheet. Simulating wood textures, applying washes, enhanced tie down material, stripping chrome parts, engine wiring, using weathering powders and pencils, color scheme selections, locating pin modifications, instruction errors, scratch building a headlight bar, and adhesive selection are all disclosed in the Step-by-Step review.

1966 Mercury Comet GT Indy 500 Pace Car

This turned out to be one of those real intense ‘kit bash’ projects due to the availability of parts. The main components were the donor body and kit from the AMT 1967 Mercury Comet (kit #31761), Comet GT wheels from Missing Link Resin Casters  and resin castings from the original AMT Dealer Promo 1966 Mercury Comet GT. There is also a little bit of scratch building and some fabrication involved but the end results were worth the effort. You’ll also have to top this off with a set of Fred Cady decals.

You’re probably asking; why go to all the trouble of resin casting and hacking two bodies together when you can just modify an old AMT Promo model, right? That’s a great question. The answer is: cost, detail and the challenge! It’s hard to find an original Mercury Comet GT promo car in good shape for less than $75. On the other hand you can get the decals, donor kit and wheels for under about $25 delivered, by doing some careful eBay shopping. Once you’ve got the resin casting molds made you can make more of these for your friends.

You can almost see yourself sitting there in front of the pack in that big block Mercury on that sunny day in May of 1966, with the sound of racing engines revving up behind you for the big race!
