As a Mopar fanatic, I was really excited to review this kit. I collect anything made by Chrysler, Plymouth, or Dodge. As a teenager this car was one of the first cars I saw on the lots after I got really interested in cars.  I was amazed at the colors these cars came in and with the huge engines. And all this was available for “only” $3,280.00 in 1970. Today these cars sell for upwards of $75,000. Boy what a missed investment opportunity!

For the Modeler: Monogram has given us a fantastic recreation of one of the great muscle cars of the 70’s.  This 1:24 scale kit comes in 77 pieces molded in white, chrome, and clear. A very nice decal set is included with factory markings and a stunning custom striping set.  Although the instruction book is just a pictorial guide with no written directions for assembly, the pictures give a detailed view of the pieces and their location. Separation of one-piece molded parts for better realism, paint selection criteria, optimized assembly sequences, drivetrain alignment, exterior/interior detailing, decaling sequence preparation and repairs, are all fully examined in the Step-by-Step Review.

Known as the Hellcat, the Grumman F6F series was designed to replace the F4F Wildcat series.  Although similar in many respects to the F4F, the Hellcat was an entirely new design.  Fitted with a 2,000 hp Pratt & Whitney R-2800 engine spinning a 3 blade Hamilton Standard propeller the F6F-5 had a top speed of 380 mph and a combat radius of 945 miles.  It was armed with six .50 cal machine guns (3 in each wing) and could carry up to six 5in HVAR’s (High Velocity Aircraft Rocket), and/or 4,000 lbs of bombs (1 x 2,000 lb bomb on a centerline rack and 1,000 lbs of bombs under each wing).

The Hellcat made its combat debut against the Japanese on September 1st 1943.  U.S. Navy and Marine Corps pilots flew 66,530 combat sorties in Hellcats by the end of World War Two.  The pilots claimed to have shot down 5,163 enemy aircraft while losing 270 Hellcats.  This 19:1 kill ratio (based on claimed, not confirmed kills) gives the Hellcat a kill ratio unmatched by any other U.S. Navy fighter in World War II.

For the Modeler: Avoiding mechanical construction problems with an alternate build schema, weapon marking details, seam repairs, overall, cockpit and crew member color selections, detailing sequences and decal preparation and application techniques are all fully explained in the Step-by-Step review
