Don Garlits – Tony Gibson
Back in 1964 the Don Garlits Swamp Rat VI set records for speed, 200mph in Detroit, Michigan, and 201mph in Green Meadows, NJ. His 392c.i. Dodge came to life with over 1300hp and light weight of 1,320lbs. It had the Swinger Chassis and “sling shot†body designed by Garlits. This front engine dragster was the most common before an accident when an engine blew and Don lost half his foot. Garlits was the first to design the safer rear engine dragster that we see today. Even in his early days he was a safety innovator.
For the Modeler: Even though this kit is long out of production they can still easily be found at online auction sites and garage sales. This is a skill level 2, 1:25 scale, AMT Don Garlits Wynn’s Jammer Top Fuel Front Engine Dragster model kit. It includes over 85 parts molded in gray, chrome, body molded in clear, and waterslide decals. The direction sheet for the build is very clear and states color choices for the parts. The rear tires have the winged Goodyear molded in, the front tires are molded in gray plastic with Pirelli molded in. AMT gave this a 2 rating (for intermediate builders) but in my opinion this kits is tougher than that and might be considered a 3 (experienced builder). You always need to be looking at what comes next. This build took approximately 45 hours (If it had been painted it would have taken a little longer). Keep the glue off the windshield, Tony.

The SM-67 Snark was an early cruise missile developed by the Northrop Company. As an early intercontinental missile, the Snark could carry a thermonuclear warhead to it’s intended target. The Snark, in use from 1958 through 1961, was deployed by the US Air Force’s Strategic Air Command. With the development of Inter-Continental Ballistic Missiles (ICBM’s) the Snark was rendered obsolete in 1961.
For the Modeler: This review is of the Revell #85-7810 Scale 1:81 Northrop Snark Missile SM-62. The 1:81 scale kit is a skill level 2 kit. The kit comes in units, the instructions, the bagged molded in red kit parts and the decals. The instructions are well laid out. The kit parts are well molded, with a minimum of clean up. This particular kit has raised panel lines and raised lines indicating decal placement locations for most of the decals. I built my kit straight out of the box and was quite pleased with the result. The indentations for the side booster rockets allow for a range of placement, so I needed to take some special care to ensure the Snark would sit correctly on the launch platform. Painting was the biggest issue as all the plastic is molded in red, and as can be seen in the photo not all the finished model is red, so getting an even paint coverage without the red showing through takes some preparation and care.

If you were a teenager [like me] in the late 80’s [early 90’s] you knew there was nothing cooler than a Black Firebird or Trans Am. By the time 1991 came around the current generation Firebird body style was almost ten years old and needed to be changed or at least updated. So to get the most speed out of every drop of gasoline, the engineers at GM designed a car with their most aerodynamic shape ever inspired by the Banshee show car. The 225 horsepower engine powering this “Formula†One racer allowed it to burn through a quarter mile (0.4 km) in less than 15 seconds. It didn’t take long for the beautiful ’92 Firebird to become a true dream ride.
For the Modeler: This is a skill level 2, 1:24 scale, Monogram Dream Rides series kit molded in white, clear and chrome plated pieces with soft vinyl tires. The kit features a detailed engine with Tuned-Port injection system, full interior detail, separate rear spoiler, with chrome plated details and decals with factory stock and custom graphics. Upon opening the kit, you immediately realize a few things; 1) this kit builds only as the Firebird Formula; 2) for  only 78 pieces this kit is fairly detailed. Lastly great news for all of us there is no flash to be found on this kit. The chrome and decals are well done also. This kit seems to be a reissue of kit #85-2952. Â
