The U2-c spy plane was a secret project built by Lockheed as a high altitude reconnaissance aircraft. The U2 had a nickname of Dragon Lady. The designer was Clarence Johnson and the first flight was in 1955.The CIA, Air Force and NASA all used the U2 throughout the years and is still in use today. The U2 has taken part in several operations from the Cold War up to the more recent conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. The spy plane has a ceiling of 70,000 feet. There were two incidents where the U2 was shot down; once over Russia in 1960 and another during the Cuban Missile Crises in 1962.  The former was recently popularized by the recent Tom Hanks movie, “Bridge of Spies”.

For the Modeler: This review covers the, “Made in USA” re-release of the U2-c Spyplane 1:48 Scale Hawk Model Kit #HL-421. Round2 rates this as a Skill Level 2 for ages 10 and up. For the Modeler: This review covers the New Release of the 1957 Ford Wagon GASSER by Revell. This is a partial Re-Pop as it has been released in a previous 2n1 version with Stock and Police options. This is Kit # 85-4396 in the current catalog and is in 1/25 scale. Revell rates this as a Skill Level 5 for ages 14 and up and recommends over 7 hours of build time. The kit contains 184 parts molded 1 in White, Chrome, Clear and Clear Red and has Vinyl tires and Metal pins. The decals are Waterslide. The build gives you options for both a Stock and Gasser style with all parts to outfit both designs including decals in various race teams. The chassis is a multiple part unit and well detailed. The motor has nice options and with a little aftermarket wiring is Contest Quality. The interior is multiple part and has very crisp molding with easy to detail parts. The body is straight with crisp and clean moldings and few if any mold lines or blemishes. The decals are typical top quality Revell has come to be known for as of late. The instructions are in a book format and give well laid out detailed drawings of locations, part colors and names. Overall dimensions are: Length: 8″, Width: 3″, Height: 2-3/8″.

This all ORIGINAL Chinese design that is commonly mistaken for a Yak 18A. the Nanchang CJ-5 (previous version), was a license-built version of the Yak-18. However, advancements in pilot training brought a need for a new aircraft with improved performance and a tricycle landing gear, as compared to the tail dragger version. Only about 3000 of these were built for training.   On an interesting note, the Nanchang CJ-6 makes extensive use of pneumatics to control the gear and flap extension/retraction, operate the brakes and start the engine. An engine-driven air pump recharges the system; however if air pressure is too low to start the engine then the onboard air tank can be recharged by an external source. If an external source is not available then the engine can be started by hand swinging the propeller.

For the Modeler: This review covers the Trumpeter Chinese Nanchang CJ-6 1:48 Scale aircraft Kit #02887. This kit features engraved panel lines, detailed tandem cockpits although there are NO seat backs included in the 1:48 scale kit, tricycle undercarriage, boxed-in wheel bays and single-piece canopy.  One Waterslide decal sheet with crisp and clean decals for (2) typical Chinese aircraft – 000b including instrument markings, stencil data and additional numerals allowing alternate liveries.  Directions are VERY basic a one piece fold out 3 steps (involved) and a very nice color guide sheet for decal placement and color specifics . Colors recommend are Mr. Color brand Flat Black, Tan, Light Green, Light Blue, Grey,  Red and Green . I stayed with the box art for this review which is clean and simple. The kit has four part sprues and one clear parts sprue. They are numbered and very easy to follow it gives you a choice of two options for props to use.  This model is a very nice build with only a few easy to fix flaws that are shown in the review.  Kit size: 7″ long, 8.5″ wide and 2 5/8″ Tall  (tip of tail).
