Ayrton Senna da Silva (March 21, 1960 – May 1, 1994) began his motorsport career in karting, moving up to open-wheel racing in 1981, and winning the British Formula 3 championship in 1983. He made his Formula One debut with Toleman-Hart in 1984 before moving to Lotus-Renault the following year and winning six Grands Prix over the next three seasons. In 1988, he joined Frenchman Alain Prost at McLaren-Honda. Between them, they won all but one of the 16 Grands Prix that year and Senna claimed his first World Championship. Prost claimed the championship in 1989, and Senna his second and third championships in 1990 and 1991. In 1992, the Williams-Renault combination began to dominate Formula One. Senna nonetheless managed to finish the 1993 season as runner-up, winning five races and negotiating a move to Williams in 1994. He was killed in an accident while leading the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix. He was among the most dominant and successful Formula One drivers of the modern era and is considered by many as the greatest racing driver of all time.

For the Modeler: This review covers the 2012 release of the Fujimi Ayrton Senna Kart 1993 kit in 1/20 scale. This kit can be found at online retailers and in full line hobby shops. The kit is a repackage with new parts of the earlier Senna Kart. Fujimi does not 1 use a Skill Level but this would be a Skill Level 4 for moderate builders due to the parts count and need for paint and glue. The build consists of 45 parts molded in White and Clear with a Metal axle. The decals are waterslide. As the kit manufactured in Japan the instructions are mainly in Japanese with subtext in English. I researched the internet and found reference photos to assist with my build. You get a nicely detailed race kart with a full rail chassis and separate motor. The figure is molded in Clear styrene for some odd reason and I recommend using a White Figure Primer that is thin, something made for gaming figures as it will etch into the plastic. Overall this is a tiny little kit with final dimensions of; Length: 3-3/4”, Width: 2-1/2”, Height: 2”.

Covered in this Review:  If you want to perfect your build; basic construction; preparing parts for better finishing; complete paint and adhesive selections and applications; test fitting; front suspension build; mating the body boxes to the chassis; complete engine construction and finishing; using decal setting solutions for that “painted on” look; using Gravity Colors to make realistic looking tires; decal preparation and application; complete frame construction and finishing; chain/sprocket installation; expanded driver history; are all fully examined in this 12 page, full-color Step-by-Step review in PDF format.

Ford introduced a redesigned 5th generation Mustang for the 2005 model year at the 2004 North American International Auto Show. Codenamed “S-197,” that was based on the new D2C platform. Developed under the direction of Chief Engineer Hau Thai-Tang, a veteran engineer for Ford’s Indy Car program under Mario Andretti, and exterior styling designer Sid Ramnarace, the fifth-generation Mustang’s styling echoes the fastback Mustang models of the late-1960s. Ford’s senior vice president of design, J Mays, called it “retro-futurism.” This design held through the 2014 model year with little changes. The 2014 being a holdover year as the next generation design had been announced for 2015. Since its start in 1964, the GT has been the top of the line performance model of the famous Mustang. Fifty years later, the 2014 is the final year of the 5th generation of Mustangs. The Mustang still provides the best “Bang for the Buck” of any performance car around. The proof is in the performance! Just look at its statistics: 0 to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds and running the 1/4 mile in just over 13 seconds straight from the factory!

For the Modeler: This review covers the Revell re-release (Re-Pop) of the 2014 Mustang GT in 1/25 scale. This re-release has been seen in other forms: a pre-painted kit and a Revell of Germany release. This is kit #85-4379 in Revell USA’s current catalog. This 000b version is a Skill Level 4 for the moderate builder and requires paint and glue. You get 60 parts molded in White, Chrome, Clear, Clear Red and Vinyl tires with Metal axles. The Decals are Waterslide with all major markings and dash gauges. The instructions are typical Revell book format in a 15 step build. The kit offers a simple but nicely detailed motor. The chassis is very basic and also well detailed but it needs a lot of paint work to highlight them. The interior is expressive and well designed in a multiple part tub for ease of detailing. The overall body looks good and dimensions look correct. You get a choice of hoods to build, stock or custom. There’s also two sets of rims and tires included: a larger custom set or the stock rims. Decals do offer one custom dual reverse hockey stick style Black stripe. While not considered a basic Snap kit as this requires glue, this kit is marketed and intended for the mid-level builder with some skills in modeling but not quite ready to take on a high skill level kit. Completed dimensions are: Length: 7-1/2″, Width: 3-3/16″, Height: 2-1/8″.

Kenworth W-900 Wrecker 1:25 Scale Revell Model Kit #85-2510 Review

Review and Photos by Alan Mann Alan Mann (Thumbnail)

The W900 is a Kenworth Class 8 truck known for its long-nose style. Although more aerodynamic models, such as the T600, and succeeding versions have been introduced for fleet use the stylish W900 remains in production due to its particular popularity with owner-operators. The W900 was a gradual introduction, retaining many features of its predecessors which also continued to be sold alongside it in the early 1960s. The engine sizes for the W900 range from 9 liters to 16 liters, with ratings up to 625-horsepower. The W900 has front axles from 12,000 to 22,000-lb ratings, and rear axles from 23,000-lb single to 58,000-lb tandems. The “W” stands for “Worthington”. Breakdowns do happen, and when they happen to the biggest semis you can expect to see a large wrecker doing the recovery. Many times it is the Kenworth W-900 getting it back to the shop. These Big Rig Wreckers are outfitted with cranes and equipment that allow the trucks to haul a fully loaded semi and trailer to a repair facility. These are massive machines and can range in price from $500,000 and up depending on optional equipment.

For the modeler: This review covers the recent Re-release (Re-Pop) of the Kenworth W900 Wrecker by Revell in 1/25 scale. Although it’s not really described as such, this is a 2-N-1 kit. You could also just build it as a day cab, as those parts are in the kit 1 too.  This is kit #85-2510 in the current catalog. Revell rates this as a Skill Level 5 for advanced builders and it contains 411 parts molded in White, Chrome, Clear and Vinyl and has Chain and Cording. The decals are waterslide and have a sharp color quality. The instruction sheet is typical of the Revell style in book format. This is a previously released kit and can be found in multiple releases in the past, this kit is unchanged beyond decals. For the build you get a very detailed kit with a full motor and chassis that needs full assembly. The interior is well detailed and the dash is a decal which makes detailing easy. The cab and hood are solid parts but the wrecker bed needs full assembly. This is a complicated build that requires time for part assemblies to dry, you cannot rush this build for the best results. Overall finished dimensions are: Length: 14″, Width: 4-7/16″, Height: 6″.

Covered in this Review:  If you want to perfect your build; basic construction; preparing parts for better finishing; alternate assembly sequence suggestions for fit and ease of finishing; abrasive choices; complete paint and adhesive selections and applications; test fitting; using white glue for the window glass; suspension construction; fifth wheel discussion for an optional build; frame and cross-member assembly; shock and torsion bar installation; how to replace missing parts; detailing the tires for realism; chassis construction and detailing; engine construction and detailing; fuel tank notes; interior detailing; optional finishing ideas are explained; duallie installation; detailing the turn signals and roof lights; adding blackwash detailing to the grill for realism; detailing the dashboard with accent colors; installing the driveshaft; mounting the fuel tanks; identifying and removing mold lines; optional kit parts; detailing the interior; attaching delicate parts; lightbar detailing and installation; sectioning instructions for a proper decal fit; using foil to simulate chrome trim; assembling the booms and winches; building the wrecker deck; masking for tutone paint; complete deck finishing details; combining instruction steps into sub-assemblies for better finishing; leftover parts; using floor wax to make crystal clear window glass; decal preparation and application; using decal setting solutions for that “painted on” look; are all fully examined in this comprehensive 39 page, full-color Step-by-Step review in PDF format.
